First HEROES Campaign: March 8 - March 30

About the HEROES of the Tri-County Red Cross

The HEROES of the Red Cross is the primary fundraiser for the Tri-County Red Cross. We use this program to raise the money our volunteers need to help the residents of our 22 communities prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters.

The HEROES campaign is simple and fun, relying on people contacting their friends, neighbors and local businesses to participate. Anyone -- an individual, a family, a school, a church, a civic organization or a business -- can become a HERO of the Tri-County Red Cross by either raising or donating $1,000 over a three week period.

For those with big ambitions, you can be a Super HERO by donating or raising $5,000!

HEROES can raise the money any legal way they wish.

  1. Anyone can sell HEROES 50/50 Raffle tickets to their friends and neighbors with drawings on March 30 and April 1;
  2. An individual, group or business can donate $1,000 online or by check.
  3. An individual could organize a pot-luck dinner at their church with a silent sports auction;
  4. A civic organization could host a Texas Hold-Em tournament;
  5. A restaurant could sell Red Cross Squares (we have a UPC code for them) to their customers and post them on their walls, or sell "naming rights" to booths, tables and menu items for a month;
  6. A church could hold a board game tournament with Red Cross first aid and CPR training as the prize;
  7. Shopping Centers or other businesses can place a Red Cross clothing bin in their parking lot, which raises at least $1,000 for the chapter.

There are tons more fun and easy ways to raise the money. You can think of something new and innovative, or you can check out these fundraising ideas we've put together for you.

But how do we recruit all these HEROES? It's pretty simple.

First we recruit a chair for the campaign, whose job it is to recruit five people to serve as co-chairs. For our first campaign Councilwoman Melonie Marano of Greenbrook is serving as our chair.

The co-chairs each recruit five people to serve as members of the HEROES Committee. Now we have 25 people who are on the committee.

Each Committee member is responsible for recruiting five HEROES, who agree to raise or donate $1,000. If everyone does their job, then 125 people have agreed to be HEROES!

Some folks are unable to complete all the recruiting, or raise a little less than $1,000. But if all goes well the campaign should raise about $75,000 for the chapter so we can be there when we're needed.

The 2008 HEROES campaign is being held in two parts of the chapter: The Western campaign (Dunellen, Edison, Fanwood, Greenbrook, North Plainfield, Plainfield, Scotch Plains, South Plainfield, Watchung, and Warren) from March 8 to March 30; and the Eastern campaign (Clark, Cranford, Elizabeth, Garwood, Hillside, Kenilworth, Linden, Rahway, Roselle, Roselle Park, Union and Winfield) from May 17 to June 14.
